Here is a dead center which can be used on a large metal lathe. It's long enough and the diameter is small to keep the work piece away from the headstock. The small diameter allows you to cut wood without worrying about the blade hitting the dead center.

If you want to find out the accuracy of your lathe, you chuck up on one of these dowel pins and then put a dial indicator on the pin. They measure .500" X 2.00" and are precision ground at a ISO 9001 factory.

This is a wonderful item to add to any large floor type lathe. It insures complete accuracy and holds work pieces accurately centered in the lathe. This is an item that no serious cue builder should be without. In fact, we use this very chuck on most of our large lathes. For refinishing shafts: All you do is apply two coats back-to-back, sand (with 800) and wax. It's that quick!

For sealing shafts between cuts: Best to wipe on after the first cut and then again 2 cuts from final for lasting protection and stabilization. Add again at final stage when prepping the shaft for the actual sale.
